I would like Visual Studio to check for outdated or deprecated C++ features and warnings. Too often I’ve had to ignore warnings for legacy or deprecated things in C++ because I didn’t know the warning was there.
It seems that every other time I type the letter v and I have to put the alt key in to get the number 4. Microsoft needs to do a better job of it so that I don’t need to press the alt key for anything, not even for pressing the number 4. Microsoft should make it easier to change the focus of a sentence that is currently in an editor.
Microsoft should clean up the startup and shut down of windows. If you have so many open windows, why cant your app just keep running after all the windows are closed? It makes it possible to load something on the start menu, add a shortcut to open up a specific file and just close the app instead of having to shutdown the system.
Microsoft needs to make it easy to move files from one folder to another. I keep duplicates of everything I can even if I often don’t need them. I use OneDrive sync by Microsoft to do this. But more than once I have accidentally moved stuff that Microsoft OneDrive can’t talk to.
It would be a great feature of Visual Studio to be able to design a solution, add features, test, change some default settings and then go to Visual Studio and simply see the benefits of the changes. Also, it would be great for automated builds of solutions to be able to target multiple bitness and frameworks without having to duplicate code.
For a modern IDE, theres no visual for networking, API, or event viewer. As I have no need to have my code interactive, I cannot see the reason for none of those. Networking I can do via a library or console app, but its difficult to do and hard to make it work from the IDE. Also, event viewer would be useful for debugging.

What’s new in Microsoft Visual C x6432?
This is deeply concerning. As a team lead, I literally just fought to have my whole company convert over to Azure DevOps. It was expensive and painful but I counted it a success. If less than 6 months after we have completed our migration, its announced Microsoft is pulling support in VS, we might just start need to move away from Microsoft altogether. As developers, we cant keep putting our trust in a company that disregards the huge investment of time, energy and money we put in to adopting their technologies. It feels like Microsoft has little concern of the impact these decisions have on our companies, lives and careers.
When working on a problem, I like to fix it as early as possible. With the language selected, I want to be able to quickly and easily see the results of changes to my code. This is the core of why I transitioned to the Visual Studio Open Source family of products, I no longer have to scour for tools on the web, compile them on my laptop, install them on my desktop, and still end up frustrated that my changes aren’t showing up.
In a word, awesome. There are a few new features in Visual C++, including Windows UWP support, named pipes, AppV & X, and an externalized C# compiler – all of which are mentioned in previous blogs, but I think theyre a little clearer now.
Visual C++ new features and API changes, including a deep dive into the new features, including a few API removals. This post will include only new functionality and features, as the API changes will be covered in another blog.
We are very excited for the advancements in the Visual C++ product, including the new API changes, preview features and of course in the new header files. This blog covers the new features and capabilities.
